About Umoya Trust (UK) Charity

In order to understand us you need to appreciate our name ‘UMOYA’ first. This name has its roots in several African languages – Zulu- helping wind or ‘umoja’ – soul, spirit and breath; Xhosa – spirit; Swahili- Unity; and Shona – my heart.  Generally ‘Umoya’ means the spirit of togetherness. We have come to learn that the work we do cannot be done by one person, with their own means and resources, hence the need for others. True to our name, this is an organisation that reaches to people through the soul, spirit and body. We aim to have a holistic approach to the work we do. We believe that you are an important partner in all that we do.

Umoya Trust (UK) was formed in order to capture the spirit of togetherness by expanding works already being carried out by individuals and organisations that have a heart to help the most vulnerable people in our communities. We had been running outreaches, soup kitchens within the local community, and dealing with related issues brought about by homelessness, poverty and abuse.  We have members trained in social housing and offer advice to the long-term homeless.  Some of our members have strong links to Africa and decided to continue their work when visiting African countries. This has led to us get involved in orphan support and educational support for some of the most neglected African children. Our aim is to provide the support and funding where it’s needed, ensuring the ones in need benefit from our resources, in the UK and abroad.

Our Vision

The main vision which we share is of a united world (togetherness) where those who are willing to give their time, skills, money and other resources, can help those in desperate need.

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop” (Mother Teresa)

Our Mission

Our mission is to transform lives by improving access to facilities, education and support to the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Strategy

Our strategy is simply creating a community of shared resources where those with resources gain by being transformed as they help in transforming others.
